How to Launch Wholesale on Shopify in 6 Weeks

A week-by-week plan for adding wholesale to a Shopify D2C store: pricing, company accounts, catalog rules, terms, integrations and a pilot launch.
6 MIN READ TIME

With Shopify B2B now available on every plan, a D2C brand can realistically take wholesale from "we should do this" to first purchase orders in six weeks. Here's the week-by-week plan we run with clients.

This assumes you already sell D2C on Shopify and want to add wholesale - not replatform. If you're still choosing between native B2B and a custom portal, read that comparison first.

Week 1

Wholesale Strategy & Pricing

Decide who you sell to (retailers? distributors? salons?), your minimums, and your price architecture: keystone discounts, volume tiers, or per-account price lists. Model margins with shipping and payment terms included - net 30 is a financing cost, price it in. Deliverable: a one-page wholesale policy your sales conversations can lean on.

Week 2

Company Accounts & Price Lists

Set up Shopify B2B: create company structures, buyer permissions and locations; build price lists and assign catalogs per segment. Keep it boring - two or three price lists cover most launches. Resist per-account exceptions until real accounts ask for them.

Week 3

Catalog & Quantity Rules

Wholesale buyers don't browse like consumers. Configure case packs and minimum quantities, hide D2C-only SKUs, add spec sheets and lead times to product pages. If your product data is messy, this is the week it shows - clean titles, GTINs and inventory accuracy matter more in B2B than anywhere.

Week 4

Checkout, Terms & Operations

Enable net payment terms for vetted accounts and card-on-file for the rest. Wire the operational path: how a wholesale order hits your 3PL or warehouse, who approves first orders, what the packing slip looks like. Test the whole flow with a dummy company account - including the awkward parts like partial shipments.

Week 5

Integrations & Rep Workflow

Connect what you already run: accounting (invoices with terms), inventory sync if stock lives outside Shopify, email flows for order confirmations that read B2B, not D2C. Give whoever owns wholesale a simple rep workflow: creating draft orders on behalf of a buyer covers 90% of "can you just order it for me" requests.

Week 6

Pilot & Launch

Invite 5-10 friendly accounts before announcing anything. Real buyers will find the gaps your team can't see - a missing case size, a confusing terms page, a price list mistake. Fix, then open the doors: a wholesale page on your site, a simple application form, and outreach to the waitlist you've been collecting.

Where the 6 Weeks Goes Wrong

  • Pricing debates stretch week 1 into month 2. Timebox it - you can revise price lists later.
  • Custom checkout dreams. If you need RFQs and approval chains at launch, you're in custom portal territory - different project, different timeline.
  • Dirty product data. Budget week 3 honestly if your catalog grew organically for years.
  • Nobody owns it. Wholesale launched by everyone is maintained by no one - assign an owner before week 1.
