A hybrid grocery platform for digital, USSD, and offline shopping in emerging markets
An omnichannel grocery system for emerging markets, combining web, USSD, and offline ordering with data-driven retail insights.
THE CLIENT
Kitshop.com is an online grocery platform serving customers in Kenya and Rwanda, designed specifically for markets with limited internet access and low smartphone penetration.
The platform enables users to order groceries not only through a website, but also via USSD codes and printed media campaigns, making digital commerce accessible across different infrastructure levels.
In addition to retail operations, the system also collects structured sales and product data, which is further leveraged as Big Data insights for retail companies in the US
PROBLEM SPACE
Low Digital Accessibility
Large parts of the target regions have limited internet access and low smartphone penetration, restricting traditional eCommerce adoption
Multi-Channel Commerce Requirement
The platform needed to operate seamlessly across web, USSD, and offline channels (print media)
Infrastructure Limitations
Systems had to function reliably in low-bandwidth and unstable connectivity environments
Data Value Beyond Commerce
Beyond selling groceries, the platform needed to capture structured data for external analytics use
WHAT WE DID
Multi-Channel Commerce System
Developed a hybrid platform that supports online ordering, USSD-based transactions, and offline order acquisition through printed codes
USSD Integration Layer
Implemented USSD-based ordering flows allowing users without smartphones or internet access to place orders via mobile operators
eCommerce Platform Development
Built a WordPress + WooCommerce-based online store for standard digital users
Data Collection & Big Data Pipeline
Structured product and sales data collection to enable analytics and external data monetization for retail insights
Payment Integration System
Integrated Stripe API for secure online transactions where applicable
TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION
Analyzed user behavior in low-connectivity regions and defined multi-channel interaction patterns
Designed a platform that connects web storefront, USSD flows, and offline acquisition channels into one ecosystem
Built a WooCommerce-based grocery store optimized for performance and simplicity
Developed structured USSD interaction sequences for product browsing and order placement
Implemented Python-based data handling for aggregation and export of sales insights
Let's talk
Let's design a product your users will love — and your business will grow with.
WORKING PROCESS
The system was designed around real limitations — not assumptions of full connectivity
Every user segment was considered: smartphone users, feature phone users, and offline users
USSD and web flows were optimized to minimize steps and cognitive load
Beyond retail functionality, data collection was treated as a core system output
The architecture supports replication in other low-infrastructure regions
PROJECT RESULTS
A multi-channel grocery commerce system adapted for low-connectivity regions
Increased accessibility through USSD and offline ordering channels
Structured sales and product data pipeline for external analytics use
Functional eCommerce system combining WordPress and WooCommerce
A scalable model for emerging market digital retail infrastructure
